The film is set to release on 9 September 2011.
Production

Development

"I always had this fear of writing till I picked up a pen and then, the words just flowed. Writing the 150 pages of my script marked the high point of my life."
-Writer/Director Ali Abbas Zafar[4]
Yash Raj Films announced the then-untitled project on 5 August 2010.[5] Ali Abbas Zafar, who's been an assistant director on a number of Yash Raj Films productions such as Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, Tashan, New York and Badmaash Company, makes his feature writing and directing debut with this film, which has been described as a comedy of errors by lead actor Imran Khan.[6] After Band Baaja Baaraat, this marks the second Yash Raj Films production in a row to be helmed by a first time director who was previously an assistant director. Zafar is originally from Dehradun, where much of the story is set.[6] After years of working with Yash Raj Films, he submitted three love stories to producer Aditya Chopra, who eventually greenlit Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, enabling Zafar to start writing his 150 page long script.[4] Ali Abbas Zafar is an alumnus of The Players, the acclaimed theater society of Kirori Mal College, University of Delhi, where he acted in different plays including an adaptation of William Golding's Lord of the Flies.
Like many Bollywood films, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan has suffered allegations that it is a rip-off of an American film even before filming wrapped. According to these sources, the film rips off Dan In Real Life,[7][8] in which Steve Carrell's character also falls in love with his brother's girlfriend (played by Dane Cook and Juliette Binoche respectively). It should be noted that this theme is fairly widespread in fiction and not at all limited to these films and unless Mere Brother Ki Dulhan's scenes mirror those of Dan In Real Life exactly, it is safe to say that Zafar's film is an original work. The film has also drawn comparison to an earlier Yash Raj Films production, Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai.[9]

Casting

Imran Khan and Katrina Kaif play the romantic leads in the film, and their involvement was announced in the same press release as the initial production company announcement.[5] Both actors were among the most popular Bollywood actors at the time, having delivered huge hits in the recent past, and this is the first time they've been paired together. They were initially to star together in 7 Days In Paris for director Sanjay Gadhvi, but the film has been indefinitely postponed.[10] Thus, while their pairing has made the film quite anticipated,[11][12] some media publications have alleged that their casting was an attempt by Yash Raj Films to end a recent string of box-office flops and disappointments.[13] While this is Imran Khan's first movie for Yash Raj Films, Katrina Kaif had previously worked with them (and then assistant director Ali Abbas Zafar) on the critical and commercial hit New York. She was able to take the role thanks to the postponement of Dostana 2 to which she was already committed.[14] Her role has been reported in the media as different than characters she's played so far, and alternatively described as a "friendly, simple Delhi girl"[15] or a "rebel with a grungy punk look".[16] Prior to shooting, the director selected some 20/25 tattoo designs for Kaif to choose from for her character.[17]
The role of Katrina Kaif's fiancé and Imran Khan's brother was initially offered to Ritesh Deshmukh who turned it down after initially accepting it.[18] It was then given to Ali Zafar (no relation to the director), an actor who'd received rave reviews for his debut film Tere Bin Laden and who confirmed his participation via his Twitter account.[19] A popular singer, Zafar will also perform his character's singing in the film and described his casting as "a dream come true"[20] and his role as a "parallel lead role".[21] Interestingly, this marks an Indian film where none of the three leads are Indian nationals, as Khan is Indian-American, Kaif is British of partly Indian descent and Zafar is Pakistani. The film additionally stars a new actress whose name hasn't been revealed yet.[20]
On 17 October 2010, several media outlets reported on the casting of Preity Zinta in an unspecified "glamorous role".[22] The actress however quickly denied the report on her official Twitter page.[23]

Filming

Katrina Kaif and Imran Khan as featured in the film.
Filming started on 25 September 2010 and was scheduled to be completed by November.[24] A few days prior to shooting, both Katrina Kaif and Ali Zafar were at the Tere Bin Laden party in Mumbai and Kaif thought she'd go introduce herself to Zafar as they would be working together shortly after. Kaif was left embarrassed however after Zafar failed to recognize her and greeted her with a puzzled look. Kaif later shrugged off the incident, reasoning that Zafar had only been around the industry for a short while and that she, despite having been around a lot longer, still didn't know everyone.[25] In a later interview, Zafar claimed that he had in fact recognized Kaif, but simply didn't have the awed reaction she and other people might have expected.[26] The film started shooting in Delhi[24] and Pataudi,[27] before moving on to Chandigarh,[28] Agra,[20] Dehradun,[29] Mussoorie,[24] Haridwar,[6] Dhanaulti,[29] Punjab[24] and Himachal Pradesh[24] for a total of 45 days of filming in northern India and finally finishing the film in Mumbai.[30] Juggling between this film and the final shots of Tees Maar Khan and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara,[31] Kaif joined the shoot on September 27, just after having had her hair done in for the film by trendy hair stylist Said Asif in Mumbai.[15] Her hair in the film has been described as "poker straight, waist length with short fringes".[32][33]
The first scene shot was a song and dance sequence set during a wedding in which Kaif wore a lehenga.[11] A bloody incident happened very early in the shoot, on September 29, while the crew was filming at Pataudi Palace. The scene being shot, comic in nature, involved Imran Khan pulling Katrina Kaif towards him while pointing a gun towards other cast members. However, Khan miscalculated the move and instead sent the gun barrel crashing into Kaif's nose, causing it to bleed profusely. The injury was all the more painful for Kaif as Khan hit her in exactly the same spot that Ranbir Kapoor had during a similar incident on the set of Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani a year before. Kaif later commented "Yes, I got hit in the same place as I did during Ajab. I am pretty bruised but the staff feels it's good luck for the film. But it was a funny scene so I think it was worth it"[34] and "Please don't make it seem as if Imran was careless or something. These things happen. We were shooting one of the really madcap scenes where the actors' limbs acquire a life of their own. Imran's hand landed on my face"[31] while joking "Yeah, I got whacked twice in the same spot. I think I need to get my nose fixed".[31] Another incident of sorts was reported by the media in early October[35] and involves an emotional scene where Kaif's character slaps Khan's. Kaif would have been content to slap Khan once, however he insisted on sixteen takes so that the director would have a variety of slaps to choose from. Kaif later joked that the slap would be "the most authentic screen-slap audiences will ever see". Kaif was involved in another accident a few weeks later while filming in Nabha.[36] Her hair got caught in a fan, and it was thanks to co-star Ali Zafar's quick action that the incident didn't turn more serious. Zafar and a spot boy named Raju did however sustain minor injuries and bruises.
The film's title, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, was revealed on October 2 along with a few promo pictures.[2] While filming in the Doon Valley, the cast & crew stayed at the Jaypee Residency Manor Hotel [1] in Mussoorie.[29] Khan and Kaif are said to have gotten along well during the shoot with Kaif declaring to the media "He's really fun to gel with. Luckily, he's engaged, so we can chat and enjoy one another's company without people's imagination going on a rampage!"[31] and "Imran is very simple and straight forward person. He's absolutely focussed on his work and I like people for whom everything except their work is secondary."[10] while Khan praised her acting and declared "I have always enjoyed working with people who are out to prove a point. That way, we all end up giving our best".[10] Ali Zafar also reported his good experiences on set early on during filming, noting that his co-stars were "fun to work with"[37] and that Khan was very friendly while Kaif was nice and professional.[26] Zafar actually started teaching Kaif how to play the guitar while working on the film. He stated that the actress was a quick learner and that she'd promised him that if the film made over 600 million at the box office, she would do a music video with him.[38]

Story / Writer
Karan Razdan

Warning’ is a super natural movie which takes you on a journey life after death. The story begins when a naive boatman Ramsharan (Karan Razdan) is arrested on towering seas. All of his men working beneath him are being murdered. Azaan khan (Atul kulkarni) who is the head of the jihadis is a cruel man and is on a task to enter in to India and to take life of the blameless citizens. A battle starts between Ramsharan and Azaan, where Ramsharan is finally shot down by Azaan.
On the other side in a small village there lives Ramsharan’s family which includes his father Devsharan (Satish Kaushik), mother Dulariben (Ila Arun), wife Megha (Rituparna Sen) and the little daughter Muskaan (Jannat). However, they all feel sad of the death of their beloved Ramsharan. Muskaan has a number of childlike queries about her father loss, but the impression of somebody passing away is unknown to her. However nobody knows that she will be soon going to know the truth behind the death and life in a bizarre way, which not only child but adults too do not know still.
A spirit starts to disturb Muskaan, grips her in their evil jaws and soon the deceased one tries to get in touch with her. No one knows why some deceased one tries to get in touch with her and her family and this pressure takes the entire village on a ghostly look. The Nawab of the region (Zakir Hussein) takes an eager attention in the family and so do a Moulana (Anang Desai) also gives his best effort to aid the Sharan family. He in fact also introduces them to Peer Jammatuddin Shah Baba (Anupam Kher), who makes an effort to get rid of the spirit from Muskaan being.
Sadly Peer fakir baba fails to destroy the spirit but succeeds to get rid of it. However before running through over the chimney, the spirit writes something on the house wall which even veteran Maulana or Fakir baba can’t read. Though Peer fakir Jammat Ali Shah has a few of the answers to it, but the answers are leading to a number of underneath questions. It’s about Life after Death, it’s about the perception of Karma and it’s about the sacred war which goes on to fume all over the humanity.
After watching the trailer, one would certainly feel that the movie is a one more clichéd supernatural film which tells you about the same ghostly stories. However it still makes you interesting on what is the film about, where does the story goes, what will be its ending, what the spirit is trying to say and so on. It does make you in an eager mode such that what would the climax of this movie. Now that is some plus point after watching the trailer. Apart from this, the movie seems to like having a typical clichéd story, below than average special effects and standard background score. The only attraction in this movie is that it has various well known and popular actors such as Atul kulkarni, Anupam Kher, Rituparna Sen, Satish Kaushik, Ila Arun, Anang Desai, Govind Namdeo, Zakir Hussain and many more.
After directing some adult oriented movies like Hawas (2004) starring Meghna Naidu, Girlfreind (2004) starring Amrita Arora and Eesha Koppikar, and so on, director Karan Razdan has chosen an all together different genre this time which includes horror with a suspenseful story. The trailer has been well made if we consider the budget and the banner of the film; it is been well directed and edited such that the overall story and the concept are being able to understand the viewers, with a decent introduction to the special effects given by them, which can be rate as below to average. The film is being scheduled to release on 5th of August, 2011.

Ricky Martin The Greatest Hits 2011

It's easy for us Brits to label Ricky Martin as a naff, one-man cruise show - especially when he names his new greatest hits album after the amount of years he's been in the biz: the apparently lucky number 17. That said, with worldwide album sales of 55 million and a string of Grammys to his name, the retrospective serves as a timely reminder that there's a helluva lot more to the Puerto Rican star than a decent set of hips.

Cherry-picking - you guessed it - 17 of his 27 Spanglish hits since breaking the UK in 1995, it's surprising how well many of his songs of the now largely defunct latino pop genre have stood up over time. Of course, 'Livin' la Vida Loca' remains a staple of pop culture, but the steamy ballad 'Private Emotion', Christina Aguilera-assisted 'Nobody Wants to be Lonely' and rock-infused 'Loaded' are as appealing today as they were over a decade ago.

While the lion's share of the patchwork-quilted LP is an exercise in positive nostalgia, Martin's career hasn't been without its misfires. 'Shake Your Bon-Bon' is as novelty as it was in '99, 'She Bangs' in hindsight sounds all the more contrived after his not-so-surprising coming out last year, and how 'She's All I Ever Had' managed to peak at number two in the US is anyone's guess. Nonetheless, if his recent duet 'The Best Thing About Me Is You' with Joss Stone is anything to go by, there's plenty more shake 'n' twist in those infamous hips yet.

3 ninjas 2011

Meet Samuel, Jeffrey and Michael Douglas! Their grandfather, Mori Tanaka, is highly skilled in the fields of Martial Arts and Ninjitsu. And for years he's been training these boys this technique. He even gave them names: Rocky because he's "solid and cool as granite rock"; Colt, because he's "fast and free, a spirit of a young wild horse"; and Tum Tum because ambition begins and ends with his tummy". But one day, an old "friend" of Grandpa's, Hugo Snyder, is heard from again. He's being hassled by the FBI, and the boys' father happens to be an FBI officer. So Snyder figures if he kidnaps the father's kids, it will ease the tension, none of his own men are suitable for the task, so he hires three dim and incredibly incompetent surfers to do the deed. The boys treat them to a night of Ninja moves and hilarious gags, ala Home Alone. But the boys soon get captured by Snyder, and what is more, they (especially Colt) becomes doubtful of their grandfather, until Grandpa bursts into action and fights Snyder.

Tagline: “Crosses Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Home Alone!”

Really? Because then I would expect Shredder entering the turtles’ sewers and instead of using weapons, the turtles use pizza boxes to construct sophisticated traps, leading to his incarceration. But I guess it would be like Kevin from Home Alone had training in karate.

Summary: We have three kids (Rocky, Colt, and Tum-Tum) who are 1/4 Japanese and learn karate and some weaponry (which they don’t use) from their Japanese grandpa, a former FBI operative. The villain, Snyder, who happens to be the grandpa’s ex-partner, decides to hold them hostage because their father is leading the FBI investigation to crack his illegal operations. Yeah, it would be so cool if my grandpa taught me the art of assassination. It’s more of a martial arts comedy, like a kid version of Jackie Chan films.

Apparently, there’s an international version of the film featuring uncut scenes. Wow, I’d love to see what kind of violence they’d put in a kid’s movie! But for this, I watched the American version.

I remember watching this as a kid and having goals to become a great karate master one day. Tum Tum’s my favorite: always has some sort of comfort food without getting any fatter. The grandpa is the weirdest, yet coolest character. It’s a shame he doesn’t do any of the karate moves during the fight scenes. It’s a painfully obvious stunt double.

Minus all the plot goofs, cheesy kid humor, and overuse of wacky sound effects, it’s still a fun, beat-em-up, childhood movie to watch. But why the hell do the ninjas wear goggles??

bellflower movie 2011

bellflower movie 2011 review

There have been many films in recent years trying to cash-in on America’s addiction to bad relationships. I mean seriously, with over 50% of the population getting divorced, who really wants to see a bunch of happy people living their lives of togetherness? The answer it seems, is apparently no one.

Evan Glodell’s Bellflower is similar to those films in the sense that it revolves around a bad relationships, however, it unfolds like nothing you’ve ever seen.

Centered around Woodrow (Glodell) and his best friend Aidan (Tyler Dawson), Bellflower is a runaway train right from the beginning. Blending alcohol, sex, violence, and a love for fire, the film spirals in and out of reality while Woodrow deals with his feelings over a temptress named Milly while his friends try and help him maintain his sanity.

Personally, this has been the greatest film I’ve seen at SXSW. Glodell has concocted a truly explosive movie that pushes the viewer to the limit and refuses to let go until the final frames play out. This is not a movie for the warm hearted, nor those seeking renewed faith in romance. This is a movie for those who lost control when their heart was broken and the aftermath the followed.

I don’t want to give too much away, as the film works best for those completely unaware of whats about to pass, but I cannot urge you enough to see this film. Bellflower is a blur of life and lust at full throttle. Find a theater, better yet a festival, and support this film.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes 2011

rise of the planet of the apes review

What parents need to know
Violent sci-fi origin story is likely to appeal to teens.

Parents need to know that this sci-fi thriller is the origin story/prequel to The Planet of the Apes and is sure to include scenes of violence between the genetically enhanced apes and the unsuspecting human population. Like the Star Wars prequels, this is ultimately a very dark tale about how a scientist's overconfidence leads to an eventual war for world domination and the titular Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Expect sci-fi fans, especially teen boys, to express an interest, as well as hardcore Harry Potter devotees who want to see co-star Tom Felton play something other than Draco Malfoy.

Justin Bieber's Never Say Never - The Remixes Due Valentine's Day
Rascal Flatts, Chris Brown are among special guests featured on seven-track CD.

Justin Bieber knows how to make his legion of Beliebers swoon on Valentine's Day. Come February 14, the pop megastar will release Never Say Never - The Remixes, the musical counterpart to "Never Say Never," his feature-film debut. As teased a few weeks ago, the limited-edition CD will feature a brand-new track and remixed tunes with features from Rascal Flatts, Chris Brown and more.

The seven-track CD, which includes a 12-panel official movie-poster foldout, begins with his Jaden Smith-assisted "Never Say Never." In addition to the film's trailer theme song, the project also features remixed collaborations with Rascal Flatts ("That Should Be Me") and Brown ("Up") and a live duet with Miley Cyrus ("Overboard"). The disc also includes the new Diane Warren-penned track "Born to Be Somebody." Fans can begin to pre-order the limited-edition CD for $9.99 on the Biebster's official online store.

The cover art for Bieber's remix project is the same photo featured on the 16-year-old's first movie poster for "Never Say Never," which he unveiled via a Twitter puzzle in October. In a dark varsity jacket, Bieber offers a side profile in front of a white backdrop. The 3-D movie hits theaters nationwide on February 11.

The singer's manager, Scooter Braun, hinted about some star-studded collaborations during a recent online fan chat. "Yes, Justin is working on new music," he said. "He's been talking to Drake about new music. [Bieber] and Kanye had a call today about a song they're trying to work on together. Kanye wants to produce a bunch of new songs for the new album. He's talked with Rascal Flatts. Him and Chris Brown have been sending stuff back and forth to each other."

The Never Say Never - The Remixes track list, according to Bieber's official website:

1. "Never Say Never" (featuring Jaden Smith)
2. "That Should Be Me" (remix featuring Rascal Flatts)
3. "Somebody to Love" (remix featuring Usher)
4. "Up" (remix featuring Chris Brown)
5. "Overboard" (live featuring Miley Cyrus)
6. "Runaway Love" (Kanye West remix, featuring Raekwon)
7. "Born to Be Somebody"

Colbie Caillat - All Of You

TRT Reviews: Colbie Caillat’s All Of You

Colbie Caillat has always been the female version of Jack Johnson to me. She’s a singer-songwriter who is capable of churning out an endless stream of care-free, beach ready tunes all while emoting such a sunny disposition that it’s impossible to root against her. That’s still the case with her third album, All Of You (July 12), as she remains true to her California-girl sound, but finds a way to add some flair while playing with tempo.
Lead single, “I Do,” hit #1 on the singles chart and easily became the official wedding song of the year while follow up single “Brighter Than The Sun” is starting to make waves with lively guitar strums against a backdrop of spirited handclaps and percussion. As expected, it’s the perfect summer time song to blast while laying on beach soaking up the sun.
The one song I was most eager to hear was “Favorite Song,” which features a guest rap from Common that doesn’t disappoint. Rhythmically, “Favorite Song” is one of the more up-tempo songs that appear on the album and the metaphor for wanting to be the object of someone’s affection can’t be more straight forward. Needless to say, she looks prophetic long after the song ends as she will be “stuck in your head like I knew you would.” Only downside – when Common forgets the “L” in Colbie’s name making it sound like COBIE — not once, but twice.
The album’s title track, “All Of You,” Caillat finds the gentle balance of coveting her beau even as doubt creeps into her mind as she wonders if he’s willing to give… wait for it… all of himself. While “All Of You” is not nearly the call to arms that we’ve come to expect from Caillat’s current mainstream peers in Christina Perri or even Kelly Clarkson, it’s nice to see that even ever-confident California girls express self-doubt from time to time.
On All Of You, Caillat sticks to what’s been working best for her – bright, sunny pop tracks that hone in on feelings easily accessible to all. As the old adage goes – if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. All Of You hits stores and digital retailers tomorrow, July 12th.
Standout tracks: “Brighter Than The Sun,” “Favorite Song,” “All of You.”

Story of Bodyguard movie:

When it comes to being punctual and doing his duties perfectly, Lovely Singh is unmatchable. Taking great pride in what he does, he spares no effort in giving his everything to his profession.

Summoned for an assignment of guarding Divya, the daughter of Sartaj Rana, a business tycoon Lovely Singh accompanies her to her campus, but ends up rubbing her the wrong way with his over-protective nature and paranoia about security. She finds him to be a major obstacle in leading a regular campus life. To throw him off-track and get him out of the way, she comes up with a ‘master-plan’- that of trapping him in a fake love affair. ‘Once he’s smitten by the girl of his dreams and is reveling in his new-found romance, he will leave us alone, and we shall be free to do our own thing unhindered’, says Divya to her friends.
She becomes an anonymous admirer of his and starts hounding him, expressing her ‘feelings’ in no uncertain terms. Lovely Singh however proves to be a tough nut to crack, and it takes quite a bit of doing from her side to penetrate his fort-like exterior. But once she succeeds in doing so, he transforms into a completely different person. Divya is triumphant and is all set to relish her regained freedom.
But things take an unexpected turn when she learns a few things about Lovely Singh. Things that she could’ve never even imagined! And she soon finds herself trapped in a dilemma that she’s unable to resolve! And with her, soon enough, Lovely Singh finds himself ensnared in a web of lies, trickery and deceit!
Bodyguard is the story of conflict- between innocence and mischief, love and power and life and death!

Dirty Girl 2011

DIRTY GIRL Trailer – Juno Temple Does Britney Spears’ Crossroads?

Dirty Girl played at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival where The Weinsteins saw the potential of a commercial hit in the making for the quirky Juno/Youth in Revolt crowd and duly snapped up the Juno Temple-led film for a princely seven figure sum! A big success of course for first time filmmaker Abe Sylvia who achieved the nirvana of what every rookie helmer wants when they screen their baby at the festival, but, I just wonder how the filmmaker will feel when all the champagne and celebrations have waned and the film itself is released in U.S. theatres on August 5th.

Last month Thompson On Hollywood revealed that Sylvia had been working with Harvey Weinstein on re-cutting Dirty Girl into what would be a 90-minute cut that supposedly would ‘broaden its appeal’, erasing almost twenty minutes of the feature [If we were on the Enterprise red alert sirens would be sounding out as we are heading for dangerous times!].

I mean I will admit I didn’t attend the screening of Dirty Girl in Toronto last year and I haven’t read much on the film itself, so I’m being awfully prudent in my accusations, but I always like to trust my gut in these situations and they are telling me this film has been cut to pieces and manufactured in the only way The Weinsteins know how and the rawness and the originality of what probably made the Toronto cut stand-out, has probably been wiped away for something more accessible to a young teen market.

I mean did Abe Sylvia really imagine Dirty Girl as a Mean Girls/Crossroads style film that would be marketed with the following trailer and big, bright, vibrant posters for 13 year olds?

What we have to remember is that The Weinsteins were at Toronto looking for something they could turn into a commercial winner, they weren’t there looking to preserve an artistic voice but to make money.

So baring that in mind, here’s the trailer for the 90 minute Dirty Girl about a high school terror who runs away with her overweight, gay classmate on a road trip from Oklahoma to California to find the dad she has never met.

The opposition
The reigning Spanish champions, who are widely regarded outside Manchester as the best team on the planet, were founded in 1899 in Catalonia after a Swiss footballer put an advert in a magazine seeking players. Barcelona have since grown into one of the world’s biggest clubs, racking up 21 La Liga titles, 25 Spanish Cups and four European Cup/Champions Leagues.

Head coach
Josep ‘Pep’ Guardiola, a former player who was in the Barcelona side that won the club’s first European Cup in 1992. After hanging up his boots he managed Barcelona B - Barca's reserve side - before getting promotion to the big job in 2008. And he made some start, winning everything there was to win: the Spanish league, cup and league cup, the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup. He followed that up with a second La Liga title last year and in May 2011 led Barca to the La Liga and Champions League double.

Barcelona matches in America in 2011

Barcelona is Coming to America in 2011

Congratulations D.C, Miami, and Dallas - according to the FC Barcelona website this morning you will have the opportunity to witness the world's best team in person.

The team has announced its summer 2011 tour and it is a monster one. The club will begin in Europe against unknown opponents. They will play two matches at Munich's Audi Cup on July 21 and 22, followed by a trip to Split, Croatia for a friendly July 25.

Then the team travels across the Atlantic for three matches in the United States. Dates, locations and opponents are below:

July 30 - Manchester United v. Barcelona (Washington, DC)

August 3 - AC Milan v. Barcelona (Miami, FL)

August 6 - America of Mexico v. Barcelona (Dallas, TX)

This will be the club's first trip back to the U.S. since 2009 and the club expects to make over $8 million on the tour.

My first impression is that the Manchester United/Barca match will be epic. Expect that one to be played at Fedex Field instead of RFK due to its size and the stadium will be closed to full. AC Milan, which is no stranger to the U.S. having played friendlies here the past two summers, looks to be returning again and will give the Miami area some great soccer. Finally, Dallas will allow fans of the Mexican soccer league to see how their teams match up against a European giant.

What do you think about the announced schedule? Upset they are not playing MLS teams or your hometown is not on the tour schedule? Or just happy to have a chance to see Barcelona, Manchester United, and AC Milan back in the states?

Lionel Messi

Lionel Andrés "Leo" Messi[3] (Spanish pronunciation: [ljoˈnel anˈdɾes ˈmesi]; born 24 June 1987 in Rosario) is a football player who currently plays for FC Barcelona and the Argentina national team as a forward or winger. Considered one of the best football players of his generation,[4][5][6] Messi received several Ballon d'Or and FIFA World Player of the Year nominations by the age of 21, and won in 2009[7][8][9][10] and 2010.[11] His playing style and ability have drawn comparisons to Diego Maradona, who himself declared Messi as his "successor".[12][13]
Messi began playing football at a young age and his potential was quickly identified by Barcelona. He left Rosario-based Newell's Old Boys's youth team in 2000 and moved with his family to Europe, as Barcelona offered treatment for his growth hormone deficiency. Making his debut in the 2004–05 season, he broke his team record for the youngest footballer to score a league goal. Major honours soon followed as Barcelona won La Liga in Messi's debut season, and won a double of the league and Champions League in 2006. His breakthrough season was in the 2006–07 season; he became a first team regular, scoring a hat-trick in El Clásico and finishing with 14 goals in 26 league games. Messi then had the most successful season of his playing career, the 2008–09 season, in which he scored 38 goals to play an integral part in a treble-winning campaign. This record breaking season was then eclipsed in the following 2009–10 campaign, where Messi scored 47 goals in all competitions, equalling Ronaldo's record total for Barcelona. He surpassed this record in the 2010–11 season with 53 goals in all competitions.
Messi has won five La Liga titles, three Champions League titles, scoring in two of those finals, against Manchester United in both 2009 and 2011. He was not on the pitch as Barcelona defeated Arsenal in 2006, but received a winners' medal from the tournament. After scoring 12 goals in the 2010–11 Champions League, Messi becomes the third player after Gerd Müller and Jean-Pierre Papin to top-score in three successive European Champion Clubs' Cup campaigns. However, Messi is the first one to win the Champions League top scorer titles for three consecutive years after Champions League changed its format in 1992.[14]
Messi was the top scorer of the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship with six goals, including two in the final game. Shortly thereafter, he became an established member of Argentina's senior international team. In 2006, he became the youngest Argentine to play in the FIFA World Cup and he won a runners-up medal at the Copa América tournament the following year. In 2008, in Beijing, he won his first international honour, an Olympic gold medal, with the Argentina Olympic football team.

Early life

Messi was born in Rosario, Santa Fe, to parents Jorge Horacio Messi, a factory steel worker, and Celia María Cuccittini, a part-time cleaner.[15][16][17][18] His paternal family originates from the Italian city of Ancona, from which his ancestor, Angelo Messi, emigrated to Argentina in 1883.[19][20] He has two older brothers named Rodrigo and Matías as well as a sister named María Sol.[21] At the age of five, Messi started playing football for Grandoli, a local club coached by his father Jorge.[22] In 1995, Messi switched to Newell's Old Boys who were based in his home city Rosario.[22] At the age of 11, he was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency.[23] The traditional River Plate showed interest in Messi's progress, but did not have enough money to pay for treatment for his condition which cost $900 a month.[18] Carles Rexach, the sporting director of FC Barcelona, had been made aware of his talent as Messi had relatives in Lleida, Catalonia, and Messi and his father were able to arrange a trial.[18] Rexach, with no other paper at hand, offered Messi a contract written on a paper napkin.[24][25] Barcelona offered to pay for Messi's medical bills if he was willing to move to Spain, so Messi and his father moved to Barcelona where Messi enrolled in the club's youth academy.[25][22]

Club career

Barcelona
Messi made his official debut for the first-team on 16 November 2003 aged 16 years and 145 days, in a friendly match against Porto.[26][27] Less than a year later, Frank Rijkaard let him make his league debut against RCD Espanyol on 16 October 2004 (at 17 years and 114 days), becoming the third-youngest player ever to play for Barcelona and youngest club player who played in La Liga. This record was broken by Bojan Krkić in September 2007. When he scored his first senior goal for the club against Albacete Balompié on 1 May 2005, Messi was 17 years, ten months and seven days old, becoming the youngest to ever score in a La Liga game for Barcelona[28] until it was again broken by Bojan Krkić in 2007, scoring from a Messi assist.[29] Messi said about his ex-coach Rijkaard: "I'll never forget the fact that he launched my career, that he had confidence in me while I was only sixteen or seventeen."[30]

2005–06 season

"The Maradona and Pelé polemics will end"
—Diego Maradona, on the consequences if Messi won the 2010 World Cup[31]
On 16 September, for the second time in three months, Barcelona announced an update to Messi's contract; this time it was improved to pay him as a first team member and extended until June 2014.[22] Messi obtained Spanish citizenship on 26 September 2005[32] and was finally able to make his debut in the season's Spanish First Division. Messi's first home outing in the Champions League came on 27 September against Italian club Udinese.[26] Fans at Barcelona's stadium, the Camp Nou, gave Messi a standing ovation upon his substitution, as his composure on the ball and passing combinations with Ronaldinho had paid dividends for Barcelona.[33]
Messi netted six goals in 17 league appearances, and scored one Champions League goal in six. His season ended prematurely on 7 March 2006, however, when he suffered a muscle tear in his right thigh during the second leg of the second round Champions League tie against Chelsea.[34] Rijkaard's Barcelona ended the season as champions of Spain and Europe.[35][36]

2006–07 season

Messi in a match against Rangers in 2007
In the 2006–07 season, Messi established himself as a regular first team player, scoring 14 times in 26 matches.[37] On 12 November, in the game against Real Zaragoza, Messi suffered a broken metatarsal, ruling him out for three months.[38][39] Messi recuperated from his injury in Argentina, and his return to action came against Racing Santander on 11 February,[40] where he came on as a second-half substitute. On 11 March, El Clásico saw Messi in top form, scoring a hat-trick to earn 10-man Barcelona a 3–3 draw, equalising three times, with the final equaliser coming in injury time.[41] In doing so he became the first player since Iván Zamorano (for Real Madrid in the 1994–95 season) to score a hat-trick in El Clásico.[42] Messi is also the youngest player ever to have scored in this fixture. Towards the end of the season he began finding the net more often; 11 of his 14 league goals for the season came from the last 13 games.[43]

Messi shortly before scoring a goal against Getafe
Messi also proved the "new Maradona" tag was not all hype, by nearly replicating Maradona's most famous goals in the space of the single season.[44] On 18 April 2007, he scored two goals during a Copa del Rey semi-final against Getafe CF, one of which was very similar to Maradona's famous goal against England at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, known as the Goal of the Century.[45] The world's sports press drew comparisons with Maradona, and the Spanish press labelled Messi as "Messidona".[46] He ran about the same distance, 62 metres (203 ft), beat the same number of players (six, including the goalkeeper), scored from a very similar position, and ran towards the corner flag just as Maradona did in Mexico 21 years before.[44] In a press conference after the game, Messi's team-mate Deco said: "It was the best goal I have ever seen in my life."[47] Against RCD Espanyol Messi also scored a goal which was remarkably similar to Maradona's 'Hand of God' goal against England in the World Cup quarter-finals. Messi launched himself at the ball and connected with his hand to guide the ball past the goalkeeper Carlos Kameni.[48] Despite protests by Espanyol players and replays showing it was clear handball, the goal stood.[48]

2007–08 season

Messi takes Barcelona to 2–0 against Sevilla at Camp Nou on 22 September 2007
During the 2007–08 season, Messi scored five goals in a week leading Barcelona to the top four in La Liga. On 19 September he scored once as Barcelona defeated Lyon 3–0 at home in a Champions League match.[49] He scored two goals against Sevilla FC on 22 September[50] and then on 26 September, Messi scored another two goals in a 4–1 victory over Real Zaragoza.[51] Next goal came in 4–1 away win against Levante UD in 29 September 2007. His second Champions League goal of the season came against VfB Stuttgart. On 27 February, Messi played in his 100th official match for Barcelona against Valencia.[52]
Messi was nominated for a FIFPro World XI Player Award under the category of Forward.[53] A poll conducted in the online edition of the Spanish newspaper Marca had him as the best player in the world with 77 percent of the vote.[54] Columnists from Barcelona-based newspapers El Mundo Deportivo and Sport stated that the Ballon d'Or should be given to Messi, a view supported by Franz Beckenbauer.[55] Football personalities such as Francesco Totti have declared that they consider Messi to be one of the current best footballers in the world.[56]
Messi was sidelined for six weeks following an injury on 4 March when he suffered a muscle tear in his left thigh during a Champions League match against Celtic. It was the fourth time in three seasons that Messi suffered this type of injury.[57] After coming back from the injury Messi scored his last goal of 2007–08 season against Valencia on 4 May 2008 in a 6–0 win. When the season was over Messi managed to score 16 goals and assisted 13 times in all competition.

2008–09 season

Messi in a match against Deportivo La Coruña
Upon Ronaldinho's departure from the club, Messi inherited his number 10 jersey.[58] On 1 October 2008, during a Champions League match against Shakhtar Donetsk, Messi scored two goals during the last seven minutes, after coming on as a substitute for Thierry Henry, to turn a 1–0 deficit to a 2–1 victory for Barcelona.[59] The next league game was versus Atlético Madrid, a match billed as a friendly battle between Messi and his good friend Sergio Agüero.[60] Messi scored a goal from a free kick and assisted another as Barça went on to win the match 6–1.[61] Messi netted another impressive brace against Sevilla scoring a volley from 23 metres (25 yd) and then dribbling round the goalkeeper and scoring from a tight angle for the other.[62] On 13 December 2008, during the first Clásico of the season, Messi scored the second goal in Barcelona's 2–0 win over Real Madrid.[63] He was also named second in the 2008 FIFA World Player of the Year awards with 678 points.[9]
Messi scored his first hat-trick of 2009 in a Copa del Rey tie against Atlético Madrid which Barcelona won 3–1.[64] Messi scored another important double on 1 February 2009, coming on as a second half substitute to help Barcelona defeat Racing Santander 1–2 after being 1–0 down. The second of the two strikes was Barcelona's 5000th league goal.[65] In the 28th round of La Liga, Messi scored his 30th goal of the season in all competitions, helping his team to a 6–0 victory over Málaga CF in the process.[66] On 8 April 2009, he scored twice against Bayern Munich in the Champions League, setting a personal record of eight goals in the competition.[67] On 18 April, Messi notched his 20th league goal of the season in a 1–0 win at Getafe, allowing Barcelona to maintain their six-point advantage at the top of the league table over Real Madrid.[68]
As Barcelona's season was drawing to a close, Messi scored twice (his 35th and 36th goals in all competitions) to cap a 6–2 win over Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu[69] in what was Real's heaviest defeat since 1930.[70] After scoring each goal, he ran towards the fans and the cameras lifting up his Barcelona jersey and showing another T-shirt that read Síndrome X Fràgil, Catalan for Fragile X Syndrome, to show his support for children who suffer from the affliction.[71] Messi was involved in the build-up to Andrés Iniesta's injury time goal against Chelsea in the Champions League semi-final to send Barcelona through to face Manchester United in the final. He won his first Copa del Rey on 13 May, scoring one goal and assisting another two, in a 4–1 victory over Athletic Bilbao.[72] He helped his team win the double by winning La Liga. On 27 May he helped Barcelona win the Champions League by scoring a second goal in the 70th minute giving Barcelona a two goal lead; he also became the top scorer in the Champions League, the youngest in the tournament's history, with nine goals.[73] Messi also won the UEFA Club Forward of the Year: and the UEFA Club Footballer of the Year rounding off a spectacular year in Europe.[74] This victory meant Barcelona had won the Copa del Rey, La Liga and Champions League in the one season,[75] and was the first time a Spanish club had ever won the treble.[76]

2009–10 season

"Once he's on the run, Messi is unstoppable. He's the only player who can change direction at such a pace."
"He is the best player in the world by some distance. He's (like) a PlayStation. He can take advantage of every mistake we make."

After winning the 2009 UEFA Super Cup, Barcelona manager Josep Guardiola asserted that Messi was probably the best player he had ever seen.[79] On 18 September, Messi signed a new contract with Barcelona, running until 2016 and with a buy-out clause of €250 million included, making Messi, along with Zlatan Ibrahimović, the highest paid players in La Liga, with earnings of around €9.5 million yearly.[80][81] Four days later, on 22 September, Messi scored two goals and assisted another in Barça's 4–1 win over Racing Santander in La Liga.[82] He scored his first European goal of the season on 29 September in a 2–0 win over Dynamo Kyiv,[83] and then took his goal tally to six goals in seven games in La Liga with a strike during a 6–1 routing of Real Zaragoza at Camp Nou.[84][85]
Messi was named winner of the 2009 Ballon d'Or on 1 December 2009, beating runner-up Cristiano Ronaldo by largest ever margin of 473 to 233.[86][87][88] Afterwards, France Football magazine quoted Messi as saying: "I dedicate it to my family. They were always present when I needed them and sometimes felt even stronger emotions than me."[89]

Messi at the 2009 FIFA Club World Cup
On 19 December, Messi scored the winner in the final of the 2009 Club World Cup against Estudiantes in Abu Dhabi, giving the club their sixth title of the year.[90] Two days later, he was given the FIFA World Player of the Year award, beating Cristiano Ronaldo, Xavi, Kaká and Andrés Iniesta to the award. This was the first time he had won the award, and he became the first Argentinean to ever receive this honour.[91] On 10 January 2010, Messi scored his first hat-trick in 2010 and his first hat-trick of the season against CD Tenerife in the 0–5 victory,[92] and on 17 January he scored his 100th goal for the club in the 4–0 victory over Sevilla.[93]

First he scored on the 84th minute against Málaga for a 2–1 win,[94] then he scored two goals against UD Almería in a 2–2 tie.[95] He continued his spree with an impressive week where he scored eight goals; he started by scoring a hat-trick against Valencia CF in a 3–0 home win,[96] then he scored two goals against Stuttgart, in a 4–0 win that secured Barcelona's qualification to the quarterfinals of the Champions League,[97] and finally he scored another hat-trick against Zaragoza in a 4–2 away win,[98] becoming the first Barcelona player to score back-to-back hat-tricks in La Liga.[99] He played his 200th official match for Barcelona against Osasuna on 24 March 2010.[100]
On 6 April 2010, for the first time in Messi's career he scored four goals in a single match, netting the lot in a 4–1 home win over Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-final second leg.[101][102][103] This also saw him overtake Rivaldo as Barcelona's all time greatest scorer in the competition.[104] On 10 April, Messi scored his 40th goal of the season when he netted the first goal in a 2–0 away win against title-rivals Real Madrid in El Clásico.[105] On 1 May, Messi played his 50th game of the season and scored two goals on a 4–1 away win against Villarreal.[106] Just three days later, on 4 May, Messi scored two goals in another 4–1 win at home against Tenerife.[107] Messi scored his 32nd goal of the La Liga season on 8 May, during an away win against Sevilla,[108] and in the final match against Valladolid, he scored two goals in the second half to tie Ronaldo's club record of 34 goals in a single league season, set in 1996–97,[109][110] and to finish four goals behind the all-time record held by Telmo Zarra.[111] He was named La Liga player of the year for the second year in a row on 3 June 2010.[112]

He then continued his excellent form into the UEFA Champions League group stage match against Panathinaikos where he scored two goals, assisted another two and also hit the frame of the goal on two separate occasions.
On 19 September 2010, Messi suffered an ankle injury due to an ill-advised tackle by Atlético Madrid defender Tomáš Ujfaluši in the 92nd minute of their Round 3 match at the Vicente Calderón Stadium. At first sight it was feared that Messi suffered a broken ankle that could have kept the star player away from the pitch for a minimum of six months, but MRI performed the next day in Barcelona showed he suffered a sprain in the internal and external ligaments of his right ankle.[114] Team-mate David Villa stated "the tackle on Messi was brutal" after watching the video of the play and also added that he believed the Atlético defender "didn't go into the tackle to hurt".[115] The incident caused widespread media attention and brought up the debate of equality in protecting all players in the game.
When Messi recovered he scored in a 1–1 tie against RCD Mallorca. He then scored another brace on the UEFA Champions League against København and helped the team to a 2–0 home win.[116] He continued his impressive scoring run with braces against Zaragoza and Sevilla. After two scoreless games he scored the winner against Athletic Bilbao in which Barcelona won 2–1.[134] The next week he scored the first header of the season against Mallorca on a 3–0 away win.[135] This victory was the equalising a La Liga record set by Basque club Real Sociedad in the 1979–80 campaign with a 19 unbeaten away matches. The record was broken after three days later when Messi scored the only goal on an away victory over Valencia.[136] On 8 March, Messi scored two goals against Arsenal in a UEFA Champions League match at the Camp Nou, helping Barcelona win 3–1 and qualify to the quarter-finals of the competition.[137] After failing to score for a month he scored a brace against Almería; the second goal was his 47th of the season, equalling his club record return of the previous season.[138] He surpassed his record on 12 April 2011 by scoring the winner against Shakhtar Donetsk in a UEFA Champions League game, which put him in the record book as all time top scorer in a single season for Barcelona.[139] He scored his eight goal on El Clásico on a 1–1 tie at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. He was substituted on during the 63rd minute, but was sent off on the 65th minute because the referee, Markus Merk, found he had headbutted defender Vilmos Vanczák, who was tugging Messi's shirt. The decision was contentious and Maradona even claimed the decision was pre-meditated.[146][147] Messi returned to the team on 3 September in Argentina's 1–0 World Cup qualifier away defeat to Paraguay.
