Colbie Caillat - All Of You

TRT Reviews: Colbie Caillat’s All Of You

Colbie Caillat has always been the female version of Jack Johnson to me. She’s a singer-songwriter who is capable of churning out an endless stream of care-free, beach ready tunes all while emoting such a sunny disposition that it’s impossible to root against her. That’s still the case with her third album, All Of You (July 12), as she remains true to her California-girl sound, but finds a way to add some flair while playing with tempo.
Lead single, “I Do,” hit #1 on the singles chart and easily became the official wedding song of the year while follow up single “Brighter Than The Sun” is starting to make waves with lively guitar strums against a backdrop of spirited handclaps and percussion. As expected, it’s the perfect summer time song to blast while laying on beach soaking up the sun.
The one song I was most eager to hear was “Favorite Song,” which features a guest rap from Common that doesn’t disappoint. Rhythmically, “Favorite Song” is one of the more up-tempo songs that appear on the album and the metaphor for wanting to be the object of someone’s affection can’t be more straight forward. Needless to say, she looks prophetic long after the song ends as she will be “stuck in your head like I knew you would.” Only downside – when Common forgets the “L” in Colbie’s name making it sound like COBIE — not once, but twice.
The album’s title track, “All Of You,” Caillat finds the gentle balance of coveting her beau even as doubt creeps into her mind as she wonders if he’s willing to give… wait for it… all of himself. While “All Of You” is not nearly the call to arms that we’ve come to expect from Caillat’s current mainstream peers in Christina Perri or even Kelly Clarkson, it’s nice to see that even ever-confident California girls express self-doubt from time to time.
On All Of You, Caillat sticks to what’s been working best for her – bright, sunny pop tracks that hone in on feelings easily accessible to all. As the old adage goes – if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. All Of You hits stores and digital retailers tomorrow, July 12th.
Standout tracks: “Brighter Than The Sun,” “Favorite Song,” “All of You.”

Summoned for an assignment of guarding Divya, the daughter of Sartaj Rana, a business tycoon Lovely Singh accompanies her to her campus, but ends up rubbing her the wrong way with his over-protective nature and paranoia about security. She finds him to be a major obstacle in leading a regular campus life. To throw him off-track and get him out of the way, she comes up with a ‘master-plan’- that of trapping him in a fake love affair. ‘Once he’s smitten by the girl of his dreams and is reveling in his new-found romance, he will leave us alone, and we shall be free to do our own thing unhindered’, says Divya to her friends.
She becomes an anonymous admirer of his and starts hounding him, expressing her ‘feelings’ in no uncertain terms. Lovely Singh however proves to be a tough nut to crack, and it takes quite a bit of doing from her side to penetrate his fort-like exterior. But once she succeeds in doing so, he transforms into a completely different person. Divya is triumphant and is all set to relish her regained freedom.
But things take an unexpected turn when she learns a few things about Lovely Singh. Things that she could’ve never even imagined! And she soon finds herself trapped in a dilemma that she’s unable to resolve! And with her, soon enough, Lovely Singh finds himself ensnared in a web of lies, trickery and deceit!

Dirty Girl 2011

DIRTY GIRL Trailer – Juno Temple Does Britney Spears’ Crossroads?

Dirty Girl played at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival where The Weinsteins saw the potential of a commercial hit in the making for the quirky Juno/Youth in Revolt crowd and duly snapped up the Juno Temple-led film for a princely seven figure sum! A big success of course for first time filmmaker Abe Sylvia who achieved the nirvana of what every rookie helmer wants when they screen their baby at the festival, but, I just wonder how the filmmaker will feel when all the champagne and celebrations have waned and the film itself is released in U.S. theatres on August 5th.

Last month Thompson On Hollywood revealed that Sylvia had been working with Harvey Weinstein on re-cutting Dirty Girl into what would be a 90-minute cut that supposedly would ‘broaden its appeal’, erasing almost twenty minutes of the feature [If we were on the Enterprise red alert sirens would be sounding out as we are heading for dangerous times!].

I mean I will admit I didn’t attend the screening of Dirty Girl in Toronto last year and I haven’t read much on the film itself, so I’m being awfully prudent in my accusations, but I always like to trust my gut in these situations and they are telling me this film has been cut to pieces and manufactured in the only way The Weinsteins know how and the rawness and the originality of what probably made the Toronto cut stand-out, has probably been wiped away for something more accessible to a young teen market.

I mean did Abe Sylvia really imagine Dirty Girl as a Mean Girls/Crossroads style film that would be marketed with the following trailer and big, bright, vibrant posters for 13 year olds?

What we have to remember is that The Weinsteins were at Toronto looking for something they could turn into a commercial winner, they weren’t there looking to preserve an artistic voice but to make money.

So baring that in mind, here’s the trailer for the 90 minute Dirty Girl about a high school terror who runs away with her overweight, gay classmate on a road trip from Oklahoma to California to find the dad she has never met.

The opposition
The reigning Spanish champions, who are widely regarded outside Manchester as the best team on the planet, were founded in 1899 in Catalonia after a Swiss footballer put an advert in a magazine seeking players. Barcelona have since grown into one of the world’s biggest clubs, racking up 21 La Liga titles, 25 Spanish Cups and four European Cup/Champions Leagues.

Head coach
Josep ‘Pep’ Guardiola, a former player who was in the Barcelona side that won the club’s first European Cup in 1992. After hanging up his boots he managed Barcelona B - Barca's reserve side - before getting promotion to the big job in 2008. And he made some start, winning everything there was to win: the Spanish league, cup and league cup, the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup. He followed that up with a second La Liga title last year and in May 2011 led Barca to the La Liga and Champions League double.

Barcelona matches in America in 2011

Barcelona is Coming to America in 2011

Congratulations D.C, Miami, and Dallas - according to the FC Barcelona website this morning you will have the opportunity to witness the world's best team in person.

The team has announced its summer 2011 tour and it is a monster one. The club will begin in Europe against unknown opponents. They will play two matches at Munich's Audi Cup on July 21 and 22, followed by a trip to Split, Croatia for a friendly July 25.

Then the team travels across the Atlantic for three matches in the United States. Dates, locations and opponents are below:

July 30 - Manchester United v. Barcelona (Washington, DC)

August 3 - AC Milan v. Barcelona (Miami, FL)

August 6 - America of Mexico v. Barcelona (Dallas, TX)

This will be the club's first trip back to the U.S. since 2009 and the club expects to make over $8 million on the tour.

My first impression is that the Manchester United/Barca match will be epic. Expect that one to be played at Fedex Field instead of RFK due to its size and the stadium will be closed to full. AC Milan, which is no stranger to the U.S. having played friendlies here the past two summers, looks to be returning again and will give the Miami area some great soccer. Finally, Dallas will allow fans of the Mexican soccer league to see how their teams match up against a European giant.

What do you think about the announced schedule? Upset they are not playing MLS teams or your hometown is not on the tour schedule? Or just happy to have a chance to see Barcelona, Manchester United, and AC Milan back in the states?

Lionel Messi

Lionel Andrés "Leo" Messi[3] (Spanish pronunciation: [ljoˈnel anˈdɾes ˈmesi]; born 24 June 1987 in Rosario) is a football player who currently plays for FC Barcelona and the Argentina national team as a forward or winger. Considered one of the best football players of his generation,[4][5][6] Messi received several Ballon d'Or and FIFA World Player of the Year nominations by the age of 21, and won in 2009[7][8][9][10] and 2010.[11] His playing style and ability have drawn comparisons to Diego Maradona, who himself declared Messi as his "successor".[12][13]
Messi began playing football at a young age and his potential was quickly identified by Barcelona. He left Rosario-based Newell's Old Boys's youth team in 2000 and moved with his family to Europe, as Barcelona offered treatment for his growth hormone deficiency. Making his debut in the 2004–05 season, he broke his team record for the youngest footballer to score a league goal. Major honours soon followed as Barcelona won La Liga in Messi's debut season, and won a double of the league and Champions League in 2006. His breakthrough season was in the 2006–07 season; he became a first team regular, scoring a hat-trick in El Clásico and finishing with 14 goals in 26 league games. Messi then had the most successful season of his playing career, the 2008–09 season, in which he scored 38 goals to play an integral part in a treble-winning campaign. This record breaking season was then eclipsed in the following 2009–10 campaign, where Messi scored 47 goals in all competitions, equalling Ronaldo's record total for Barcelona. He surpassed this record in the 2010–11 season with 53 goals in all competitions.
Messi has won five La Liga titles, three Champions League titles, scoring in two of those finals, against Manchester United in both 2009 and 2011. He was not on the pitch as Barcelona defeated Arsenal in 2006, but received a winners' medal from the tournament. After scoring 12 goals in the 2010–11 Champions League, Messi becomes the third player after Gerd Müller and Jean-Pierre Papin to top-score in three successive European Champion Clubs' Cup campaigns. However, Messi is the first one to win the Champions League top scorer titles for three consecutive years after Champions League changed its format in 1992.[14]
Messi was the top scorer of the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship with six goals, including two in the final game. Shortly thereafter, he became an established member of Argentina's senior international team. In 2006, he became the youngest Argentine to play in the FIFA World Cup and he won a runners-up medal at the Copa América tournament the following year. In 2008, in Beijing, he won his first international honour, an Olympic gold medal, with the Argentina Olympic football team.

Early life

Messi was born in Rosario, Santa Fe, to parents Jorge Horacio Messi, a factory steel worker, and Celia María Cuccittini, a part-time cleaner.[15][16][17][18] His paternal family originates from the Italian city of Ancona, from which his ancestor, Angelo Messi, emigrated to Argentina in 1883.[19][20] He has two older brothers named Rodrigo and Matías as well as a sister named María Sol.[21] At the age of five, Messi started playing football for Grandoli, a local club coached by his father Jorge.[22] In 1995, Messi switched to Newell's Old Boys who were based in his home city Rosario.[22] At the age of 11, he was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency.[23] The traditional River Plate showed interest in Messi's progress, but did not have enough money to pay for treatment for his condition which cost $900 a month.[18] Carles Rexach, the sporting director of FC Barcelona, had been made aware of his talent as Messi had relatives in Lleida, Catalonia, and Messi and his father were able to arrange a trial.[18] Rexach, with no other paper at hand, offered Messi a contract written on a paper napkin.[24][25] Barcelona offered to pay for Messi's medical bills if he was willing to move to Spain, so Messi and his father moved to Barcelona where Messi enrolled in the club's youth academy.[25][22]

Club career

Barcelona
Messi made his official debut for the first-team on 16 November 2003 aged 16 years and 145 days, in a friendly match against Porto.[26][27] Less than a year later, Frank Rijkaard let him make his league debut against RCD Espanyol on 16 October 2004 (at 17 years and 114 days), becoming the third-youngest player ever to play for Barcelona and youngest club player who played in La Liga. This record was broken by Bojan Krkić in September 2007. When he scored his first senior goal for the club against Albacete Balompié on 1 May 2005, Messi was 17 years, ten months and seven days old, becoming the youngest to ever score in a La Liga game for Barcelona[28] until it was again broken by Bojan Krkić in 2007, scoring from a Messi assist.[29] Messi said about his ex-coach Rijkaard: "I'll never forget the fact that he launched my career, that he had confidence in me while I was only sixteen or seventeen."[30]

2005–06 season

"The Maradona and Pelé polemics will end"
—Diego Maradona, on the consequences if Messi won the 2010 World Cup[31]
On 16 September, for the second time in three months, Barcelona announced an update to Messi's contract; this time it was improved to pay him as a first team member and extended until June 2014.[22] Messi obtained Spanish citizenship on 26 September 2005[32] and was finally able to make his debut in the season's Spanish First Division. Messi's first home outing in the Champions League came on 27 September against Italian club Udinese.[26] Fans at Barcelona's stadium, the Camp Nou, gave Messi a standing ovation upon his substitution, as his composure on the ball and passing combinations with Ronaldinho had paid dividends for Barcelona.[33]
Messi netted six goals in 17 league appearances, and scored one Champions League goal in six. His season ended prematurely on 7 March 2006, however, when he suffered a muscle tear in his right thigh during the second leg of the second round Champions League tie against Chelsea.[34] Rijkaard's Barcelona ended the season as champions of Spain and Europe.[35][36]

2006–07 season

Messi in a match against Rangers in 2007
In the 2006–07 season, Messi established himself as a regular first team player, scoring 14 times in 26 matches.[37] On 12 November, in the game against Real Zaragoza, Messi suffered a broken metatarsal, ruling him out for three months.[38][39] Messi recuperated from his injury in Argentina, and his return to action came against Racing Santander on 11 February,[40] where he came on as a second-half substitute. On 11 March, El Clásico saw Messi in top form, scoring a hat-trick to earn 10-man Barcelona a 3–3 draw, equalising three times, with the final equaliser coming in injury time.[41] In doing so he became the first player since Iván Zamorano (for Real Madrid in the 1994–95 season) to score a hat-trick in El Clásico.[42] Messi is also the youngest player ever to have scored in this fixture. Towards the end of the season he began finding the net more often; 11 of his 14 league goals for the season came from the last 13 games.[43]

Messi shortly before scoring a goal against Getafe
Messi also proved the "new Maradona" tag was not all hype, by nearly replicating Maradona's most famous goals in the space of the single season.[44] On 18 April 2007, he scored two goals during a Copa del Rey semi-final against Getafe CF, one of which was very similar to Maradona's famous goal against England at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, known as the Goal of the Century.[45] The world's sports press drew comparisons with Maradona, and the Spanish press labelled Messi as "Messidona".[46] He ran about the same distance, 62 metres (203 ft), beat the same number of players (six, including the goalkeeper), scored from a very similar position, and ran towards the corner flag just as Maradona did in Mexico 21 years before.[44] In a press conference after the game, Messi's team-mate Deco said: "It was the best goal I have ever seen in my life."[47] Against RCD Espanyol Messi also scored a goal which was remarkably similar to Maradona's 'Hand of God' goal against England in the World Cup quarter-finals. Messi launched himself at the ball and connected with his hand to guide the ball past the goalkeeper Carlos Kameni.[48] Despite protests by Espanyol players and replays showing it was clear handball, the goal stood.[48]

2007–08 season

Messi takes Barcelona to 2–0 against Sevilla at Camp Nou on 22 September 2007
During the 2007–08 season, Messi scored five goals in a week leading Barcelona to the top four in La Liga. On 19 September he scored once as Barcelona defeated Lyon 3–0 at home in a Champions League match.[49] He scored two goals against Sevilla FC on 22 September[50] and then on 26 September, Messi scored another two goals in a 4–1 victory over Real Zaragoza.[51] Next goal came in 4–1 away win against Levante UD in 29 September 2007. His second Champions League goal of the season came against VfB Stuttgart. On 27 February, Messi played in his 100th official match for Barcelona against Valencia.[52]
Messi was nominated for a FIFPro World XI Player Award under the category of Forward.[53] A poll conducted in the online edition of the Spanish newspaper Marca had him as the best player in the world with 77 percent of the vote.[54] Columnists from Barcelona-based newspapers El Mundo Deportivo and Sport stated that the Ballon d'Or should be given to Messi, a view supported by Franz Beckenbauer.[55] Football personalities such as Francesco Totti have declared that they consider Messi to be one of the current best footballers in the world.[56]
Messi was sidelined for six weeks following an injury on 4 March when he suffered a muscle tear in his left thigh during a Champions League match against Celtic. It was the fourth time in three seasons that Messi suffered this type of injury.[57] After coming back from the injury Messi scored his last goal of 2007–08 season against Valencia on 4 May 2008 in a 6–0 win. When the season was over Messi managed to score 16 goals and assisted 13 times in all competition.

2008–09 season

Messi in a match against Deportivo La Coruña
Upon Ronaldinho's departure from the club, Messi inherited his number 10 jersey.[58] On 1 October 2008, during a Champions League match against Shakhtar Donetsk, Messi scored two goals during the last seven minutes, after coming on as a substitute for Thierry Henry, to turn a 1–0 deficit to a 2–1 victory for Barcelona.[59] The next league game was versus Atlético Madrid, a match billed as a friendly battle between Messi and his good friend Sergio Agüero.[60] Messi scored a goal from a free kick and assisted another as Barça went on to win the match 6–1.[61] Messi netted another impressive brace against Sevilla scoring a volley from 23 metres (25 yd) and then dribbling round the goalkeeper and scoring from a tight angle for the other.[62] On 13 December 2008, during the first Clásico of the season, Messi scored the second goal in Barcelona's 2–0 win over Real Madrid.[63] He was also named second in the 2008 FIFA World Player of the Year awards with 678 points.[9]
Messi scored his first hat-trick of 2009 in a Copa del Rey tie against Atlético Madrid which Barcelona won 3–1.[64] Messi scored another important double on 1 February 2009, coming on as a second half substitute to help Barcelona defeat Racing Santander 1–2 after being 1–0 down. The second of the two strikes was Barcelona's 5000th league goal.[65] In the 28th round of La Liga, Messi scored his 30th goal of the season in all competitions, helping his team to a 6–0 victory over Málaga CF in the process.[66] On 8 April 2009, he scored twice against Bayern Munich in the Champions League, setting a personal record of eight goals in the competition.[67] On 18 April, Messi notched his 20th league goal of the season in a 1–0 win at Getafe, allowing Barcelona to maintain their six-point advantage at the top of the league table over Real Madrid.[68]
As Barcelona's season was drawing to a close, Messi scored twice (his 35th and 36th goals in all competitions) to cap a 6–2 win over Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu[69] in what was Real's heaviest defeat since 1930.[70] After scoring each goal, he ran towards the fans and the cameras lifting up his Barcelona jersey and showing another T-shirt that read Síndrome X Fràgil, Catalan for Fragile X Syndrome, to show his support for children who suffer from the affliction.[71] Messi was involved in the build-up to Andrés Iniesta's injury time goal against Chelsea in the Champions League semi-final to send Barcelona through to face Manchester United in the final. He won his first Copa del Rey on 13 May, scoring one goal and assisting another two, in a 4–1 victory over Athletic Bilbao.[72] He helped his team win the double by winning La Liga. On 27 May he helped Barcelona win the Champions League by scoring a second goal in the 70th minute giving Barcelona a two goal lead; he also became the top scorer in the Champions League, the youngest in the tournament's history, with nine goals.[73] Messi also won the UEFA Club Forward of the Year: and the UEFA Club Footballer of the Year rounding off a spectacular year in Europe.[74] This victory meant Barcelona had won the Copa del Rey, La Liga and Champions League in the one season,[75] and was the first time a Spanish club had ever won the treble.[76]

2009–10 season

"Once he's on the run, Messi is unstoppable. He's the only player who can change direction at such a pace."
"He is the best player in the world by some distance. He's (like) a PlayStation. He can take advantage of every mistake we make."
Arsène Wenger after Barcelona won 4–1 against Arsenal.[77][78]

Messi in action during the Joan Gamper Trophy match between Barcelona and Manchester City at Camp Nou
After winning the 2009 UEFA Super Cup, Barcelona manager Josep Guardiola asserted that Messi was probably the best player he had ever seen.[79] On 18 September, Messi signed a new contract with Barcelona, running until 2016 and with a buy-out clause of €250 million included, making Messi, along with Zlatan Ibrahimović, the highest paid players in La Liga, with earnings of around €9.5 million yearly.[80][81] Four days later, on 22 September, Messi scored two goals and assisted another in Barça's 4–1 win over Racing Santander in La Liga.[82] He scored his first European goal of the season on 29 September in a 2–0 win over Dynamo Kyiv,[83] and then took his goal tally to six goals in seven games in La Liga with a strike during a 6–1 routing of Real Zaragoza at Camp Nou.[84][85]
Messi was named winner of the 2009 Ballon d'Or on 1 December 2009, beating runner-up Cristiano Ronaldo by largest ever margin of 473 to 233.[86][87][88] Afterwards, France Football magazine quoted Messi as saying: "I dedicate it to my family. They were always present when I needed them and sometimes felt even stronger emotions than me."[89]

Messi at the 2009 FIFA Club World Cup
On 19 December, Messi scored the winner in the final of the 2009 Club World Cup against Estudiantes in Abu Dhabi, giving the club their sixth title of the year.[90] Two days later, he was given the FIFA World Player of the Year award, beating Cristiano Ronaldo, Xavi, Kaká and Andrés Iniesta to the award. This was the first time he had won the award, and he became the first Argentinean to ever receive this honour.[91] On 10 January 2010, Messi scored his first hat-trick in 2010 and his first hat-trick of the season against CD Tenerife in the 0–5 victory,[92] and on 17 January he scored his 100th goal for the club in the 4–0 victory over Sevilla.[93]
Messi then started an impressive run scoring 11 goals in five games. First he scored on the 84th minute against Málaga for a 2–1 win,[94] then he scored two goals against UD Almería in a 2–2 tie.[95] He continued his spree with an impressive week where he scored eight goals; he started by scoring a hat-trick against Valencia CF in a 3–0 home win,[96] then he scored two goals against Stuttgart, in a 4–0 win that secured Barcelona's qualification to the quarterfinals of the Champions League,[97] and finally he scored another hat-trick against Zaragoza in a 4–2 away win,[98] becoming the first Barcelona player to score back-to-back hat-tricks in La Liga.[99] He played his 200th official match for Barcelona against Osasuna on 24 March 2010.[100]
On 6 April 2010, for the first time in Messi's career he scored four goals in a single match, netting the lot in a 4–1 home win over Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-final second leg.[101][102][103] This also saw him overtake Rivaldo as Barcelona's all time greatest scorer in the competition.[104] On 10 April, Messi scored his 40th goal of the season when he netted the first goal in a 2–0 away win against title-rivals Real Madrid in El Clásico.[105] On 1 May, Messi played his 50th game of the season and scored two goals on a 4–1 away win against Villarreal.[106] Just three days later, on 4 May, Messi scored two goals in another 4–1 win at home against Tenerife.[107] Messi scored his 32nd goal of the La Liga season on 8 May, during an away win against Sevilla,[108] and in the final match against Valladolid, he scored two goals in the second half to tie Ronaldo's club record of 34 goals in a single league season, set in 1996–97,[109][110] and to finish four goals behind the all-time record held by Telmo Zarra.[111] He was named La Liga player of the year for the second year in a row on 3 June 2010.[112]
2010–11 season
On 21 August 2010, Messi scored a hat-trick in his first start of the season in a 4–0 victory over Sevilla FC in the Supercopa de España, helping Barcelona secure their first trophy of the season after a 1–3 first leg loss.[113] He also began his league season with a goal, scoring after just three minutes against Racing Santander on 29 August 2010. He then continued his excellent form into the UEFA Champions League group stage match against Panathinaikos where he scored two goals, assisted another two and also hit the frame of the goal on two separate occasions.
On 19 September 2010, Messi suffered an ankle injury due to an ill-advised tackle by Atlético Madrid defender Tomáš Ujfaluši in the 92nd minute of their Round 3 match at the Vicente Calderón Stadium. At first sight it was feared that Messi suffered a broken ankle that could have kept the star player away from the pitch for a minimum of six months, but MRI performed the next day in Barcelona showed he suffered a sprain in the internal and external ligaments of his right ankle.[114] Team-mate David Villa stated "the tackle on Messi was brutal" after watching the video of the play and also added that he believed the Atlético defender "didn't go into the tackle to hurt".[115] The incident caused widespread media attention and brought up the debate of equality in protecting all players in the game.
When Messi recovered he scored in a 1–1 tie against RCD Mallorca. He then scored another brace on the UEFA Champions League against København and helped the team to a 2–0 home win.[116] He continued his impressive scoring run with braces against Zaragoza and Sevilla. After a prolific October, he started November scoring on an away 1–1 tie against København and an away 3–1 win against Getafe where he also assisted team-mates David Villa and Pedro Rodríguez.[117] In the next fixture against Villarreal CF, he scored combining with Pedro, which gave Barcelona a 2–1 lead. He scored another goal and Barcelona won 3–1. This was the 7th consecutive match in which Messi scored, breaking his own previous record of 6. He also achieved the feat of scoring 50 goals in the calender year of 2010 with the 1st goal, while with the second goal, he achieved the same feat again, this time considering the goals he scored wearing a Barcelona shirt in 2010. Against Almería he scored his second hat-trick of the season in an impressive 8–0 away win, the second goal was his 100th La Liga goal.[118] He scored on his ninth game in a row (10th including a friendly against Brazil) on a 3–0 away win against Panathinaikos.[119]

Messi playing against Real Madrid in a Champions League match
Messi's goalscoring run ended on 29 November at El Clásico but Barcelona still managed to win 5–0 with Messi assisting Villa twice.[120] The next match day he scored a brace and gave an assist against Osasuna.[121] He followed with another brace against Real Sociedad.[122] In El Derbi, a match Barcelona won 1–5, he assisted teammates Pedro and Villa to score one goal each.[123] His first goal in 2011 came against Deportivo La Coruña with a free kick on a 4–0 away win, where he once again assisted both Pedro and Villa.[124]
Messi won the 2010 FIFA Ballon d'Or, beating his Barcelona teammates Xavi and Iniesta.[125] Messi had been nominated for the awards for the fourth consecutive year.[126] Only two days after he won the award he scored his first hat-trick of the year and third of the season against Real Betis.[127] He began the second round of the league with a goal, scoring his second penalty against Racing Santander.[128] After scoring the penalty kick, Messi revealed a message on his undershirt that said, "Happy birthday, mami.".[129] He continued his goalscoring form with a brace against Almería in the Copa del Rey semifinal,[130] and followed it up with another brace less than a week later against Hércules CF.[131] On 5 February, Barcelona broke the record for most consecutive league wins with 16 victories after they defeated Atlético Madrid 3–0 at the Camp Nou.[132] Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick to ensure the victory for his side and after the match he stated, "it's an honor to be able to pass a record set by a great like Di Stéfano" and "if the record has been around for so long is because it's very complicated to achieve and we have reached it by defeating a very difficult team who's going through a bad situation, which makes it even more difficult."[133]
After two scoreless games he scored the winner against Athletic Bilbao in which Barcelona won 2–1.[134] The next week he scored the first header of the season against Mallorca on a 3–0 away win.[135] This victory was the equalising a La Liga record set by Basque club Real Sociedad in the 1979–80 campaign with a 19 unbeaten away matches. The record was broken after three days later when Messi scored the only goal on an away victory over Valencia.[136] On 8 March, Messi scored two goals against Arsenal in a UEFA Champions League match at the Camp Nou, helping Barcelona win 3–1 and qualify to the quarter-finals of the competition.[137] After failing to score for a month he scored a brace against Almería; the second goal was his 47th of the season, equalling his club record return of the previous season.[138] He surpassed his record on 12 April 2011 by scoring the winner against Shakhtar Donetsk in a UEFA Champions League game, which put him in the record book as all time top scorer in a single season for Barcelona.[139] He scored his eight goal on El Clásico on a 1–1 tie at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. On 23 April, Messi scored his 50th goal of the season against Osasuna in a 2–0 home victory which he came on as a substitute in the 60th minute.[140]
In the first leg of the Champions League semi-finals he gave a memorable performance, scoring twice against Real Madrid in a 2–0 win, the second goal (a dribble past several players) being acclaimed as one of the best ever at that stage of the competition.[141][142] In the UEFA Champions League Finals at Wembley, Messi scored the eventual game-clinching goal to give Barcelona their third title in six years and fourth overall.[143]

International career

In June 2004, he debuted for Argentina, playing in an under-20 friendly match against Paraguay.[144] In 2005 he was part of a team that won the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship in the Netherlands. There, he won the Golden Ball and the Golden Shoe,[145] scoring in the last four of Argentina's matches and netting a total of six for the tournament.
He made his full international debut on 17 August 2005 against Hungary at the age of 18. He was substituted on during the 63rd minute, but was sent off on the 65th minute because the referee, Markus Merk, found he had headbutted defender Vilmos Vanczák, who was tugging Messi's shirt. The decision was contentious and Maradona even claimed the decision was pre-meditated.[146][147] Messi returned to the team on 3 September in Argentina's 1–0 World Cup qualifier away defeat to Paraguay. Ahead of the match he had said "This is a re-debut. The first one was a bit short."[148] He then started his first game for Argentina against Peru; after the match Pekerman described Messi as "a jewel".[149]
On 28 March 2009, in a World Cup Qualifier against Venezuela, Messi wore the number 10 jersey for the first time with Argentina. This match was the first official match for Diego Maradona as the Argentina manager. Argentina won the match 4–0 with Messi opening the scoring.[150]
On 17 November 2010, Messi scored a last-minute goal against South American rivals Brazil after an individual effort to help his team to a 1–0 win in the friendly match, which was held in Doha. This was the first time that he had scored against Brazil at senior level.[151] Messi scored another last-minute goal on 9 February 2011 against Portugal in a penalty kick which he give his side a 2–1 victory in the friendly match, which was held in Geneva, Switzerland.
2006 World Cup
The injury that kept Messi from playing for two months at the end of the 2005–06 season jeopardised his presence in the 2006 World Cup. Nevertheless, Messi was selected in the Argentina squad for the tournament on 15 May 2006. He also played in the final match before the World Cup against the Argentine U-20 team for 15 minutes and a friendly match against Angola from the 64th minute.[152][153] He witnessed Argentina's opening match victory against Ivory Coast from the substitute's bench.[154] In the next match against Serbia and Montenegro, Messi became the youngest player to represent Argentina at a World Cup when he came on as a substitute for Maxi Rodríguez in the 74th minute. He assisted Hernán Crespo's goal within minutes of entering the game and also scored the final goal in the 6–0 victory, making him the youngest scorer in the tournament and the sixth youngest goalscorer in the history of the World Cup.[155] Messi started in Argentina's following 0–0 draw against the Netherlands.[156] In the following game against Mexico, Messi came on as a substitute in the 84th minute, with the score tied at 1–1. He appeared to score a goal, but it was ruled offside with Argentina needing a late goal in extra time to proceed.[157][158] Coach José Pekerman left Messi on the bench during the quarter-final match against Germany, which they lost 4–2 on a penalty shootout.[159]

2007 Copa América

Messi at the 2007 Copa América
Messi played his first game in the 2007 Copa América on 29 June 2007, when Argentina defeated United States 4–1 in the first game. In this game, he showed his capabilities as a playmaker. He set up a goal for fellow striker Hernán Crespo and had numerous shots on target. Tevez came on as a substitute for Messi in the 79th minute and scored minutes later.[160]
His second game was against Colombia, in which he won a penalty that Crespo converted to tie the game at 1–1. He also played a part in Argentina's second goal as he was fouled outside the box, which allowed Juan Roman Riquelme to score from a freekick, and increase Argentina's lead to 3–1. The final score of the game was 4–2 in Argentina's favor and guaranteed them a spot in the tournament's quarterfinals.[161]
In the third game, against Paraguay the coach rested Messi having already qualified for the quarter-finals. He came off the bench in place of Esteban Cambiasso in the 64th minute, with the score at 0–0. In the 79th minute, he assisted a goal for Javier Mascherano.[162] In the quarter-finals, as Argentina faced Peru, Messi scored the second goal of the game, from a Riquelme pass in a 4–0 win.[163] During the semi-final match against Mexico, Messi scored a lob over Oswaldo Sánchez to see Argentina through to the final with a 3–0 win.[164] Argentina went on to lose 3–0 to Brazil in the final.[165]
2008 Summer Olympics

Messi in the semi-final against Brazil at the 2008 Olympics
Having barred Messi from playing for Argentina in the 2008 Olympics,[166] Barcelona agreed to release him after he held talks with newly appointed coach Josep Guardiola.[167] He joined the Argentina squad and scored the first goal in a 2–1 victory over Ivory Coast.[167] He then scored the opening goal and assisted Ángel di María in the second to help his side to a 2–1 extra-time win against the Netherlands.[168] He also featured in Argentina's match against rivals Brazil, in which Argentina took a 3–0 victory, thus advancing to the final. In the gold medal match, Messi again assisted Di María for the only goal in a 1–0 victory over Nigeria.[169]
2010 World Cup
Messi played the entire game on Argentina's opening match in the 2010 World Cup, the 1–0 victory against Nigeria. He had several opportunities to score but was repeatedly denied by Vincent Enyeama.[170] Messi started in Argentina's following 4–1 win against Korea Republic; he participated in all of the goals of his team and helped Gonzalo Higuaín score a hat-trick.[171] On the third and last group stage match Messi captained during Argentina's 2–0 win over Greece, again being the centrepoint of Argentina's play and was voted man of the match.[172]
At the Round of 16 he assisted Carlos Tévez for the first goal in a 3–1 win against Mexico. The referee awarded that goal even though it was a clear offside.[173] The World Cup ended for Argentina with a 4–0 loss against Germany in the quarter-finals.[174]
2011 Copa América
He took part in the 2011 Copa América in Argentina, where did not score a goal but notched three assists. He was selected man of the match in matches against Bolivia (1–1) and Costa Rica (3–0). Argentina were eliminated in the quarter-finals in a penalty shoot-out against Uruguay (1–1 a.e.t.), Messi scoring as first penalty taker.

Outside football

Personal life

Messi was at one stage romantically linked to Macarena Lemos, also from his hometown of Rosario. He is said to have been introduced to her by the girl's father when he returned to Rosario to recover from his injury a few days before the start of the 2006 World Cup.[175][176] He has in the past also been linked to the Argentine glamour model Luciana Salazar.[177][178] In January 2009 he told "Hat Trick Barça", a programme on Canal 33: "I have a girlfriend and she is living in Argentina. I am relaxed and happy".[178] He was seen with the girl, Antonella Roccuzzo,[179] at a carnival in Sitges after the Barcelona-Espanyol derby. Roccuzzo is a fellow native of Rosario.[180]
Messi has two cousins also involved in football: Maxi, a winger for Club Olimpia of Paraguay, and Emanuel Biancucchi, who plays as a midfielder for Spain's Girona FC.[181][182]
Charity
In 2007 Messi established the Leo Messi Foundation, a charity supporting access to education and health care for vulnerable children.[183][184] In an fansite interview, Messi said: “Being a bit famous now gives me the opportunity to help people who really need it, especially children."[185] In response to Messi’s own childhood medical difficulties, the Leo Messi Foundation supports Argentine children diagnosed with medical conditions by offering treatment in Spain and covering the transport, hospital and recuperation costs.[186] Messi’s foundation is supported by his own fundraising activity with additional assistance from Herbalife.
On 11 March 2010 Messi was announced as a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF.[187] Messi’s UNICEF ambassador activities are aimed at supporting children’s rights. Messi is supported in this by FC Barcelona, who also have a strong association with UNICEF.[188]

Media

He is featured on the front covers of the video games Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 and Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 and is also involved in promotional campaigns for the games.[189][190] Messi, along with Fernando Torres,[191] is the face of Pro Evolution Soccer 2010, and was also involved in the motion capturing and the trailer.[192][193][194] Messi is sponsored by the German sportswear company Adidas and features in their television advertisements.[195] In June 2010, Messi also signed a three–year contract with Herbalife[196] which further supports the Leo Messi Foundation.

Patrick Wolf – Lupercalia

TRT Reviews: Patrick Wolf – Lupercalia

My first thought on listening to Patrick Wolf’s new album, Lupercalia, is that Wolf has gone back to the same well he drew from for 2007′s buoyant single “The Magic Position.” To be fair, the first single from Lupercalia, “The City,” recalls those carefree verses like Rosemary Brown channeling Franz Liszt, complete with saxophone and trickling piano interludes.
The second single, “House,” maintains the upbeat, lovelorn beat, surrendering gently to “Bermondsey Street,” whose hopeless romanticism almost puts “The Magic Position” to shame. In fact, one listener on Rdio postured that Wolf must have recorded the album in Disneyland.
The observation is fair, to a point. Where The Bachelor was dark, twisting and upset, Lupercalia is light, smooth and (mostly) content. The blocks of synthesizer that buffeted many of the former’s best tracks have been traded for harps and horns.
However, if you listen to the two albums together, back to back, the continuation of theme is fairly apparent. Take “Who Will,” from The Bachelor, and pair it with “The House,” from Lupercalia. Is the question answered? If the former was the descent into the storm, then Lupercalia is Wolf’s slow, but steady, climb back into the sunshine. (With the strong exception of “The City,” which is firmly rooted in beach sand.)
In the end, Lupercalia is certainly more upbeat, but far from an abandonment of theme. If anything, the album speaks to the strength of Patrick Wolf’s catalogue as a complete set.
Favorite Track: “Time of My Life” (no contest, though “Armistice” came close)

Kelly Rowland Album - Here I Am

Album Review: Kelly Rowland Here I Am

After a few false starts, Kelly Rowland will (finally!) release her third solo album, Here I Am (July 26th), which features a mix of sensual R&B cuts like “Work It Man” and “Feelin’ Me Right Now” and pulsating dance-floor hits in “Commander” and “Turn It Up.” With a star-studded roster of producers ranging from Darkchild to StarGate to Tricky Stewart, it’s obvious Universal Music is looking for Here I Am to put Ms. Rowland on the map as a legitimate solo artist.
The album already boasts one bona fide hit in “Motivation,” the breathy slow jam featuring Lil Wayne spent upwards of 18 weeks on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop songs chart, including seven non-consecutive weeks at number one. Not a bad way to kick-off an album release. So, let’s dig in, shall we?
The album opens with the bombastic “I’m Dat Chick,” produced by Tricky Stewart, which sets the stage by positioning Ms. Rowland as the assertive, confident woman that is more than ready to step into the solo spotlight. Second cut on the album, “Work It Man” featuring Lil Playy, has dark-horse potential. Yes, potential. It could be a solid hit in the waiting as it opens with a strong piano riff before kicking into a more mid-tempo jam. The only downside to “Work It Man” is that unlike the albums obvious standouts, it only reaches a simmering point rather than full on boil.
Putting “Motivation” aside given its chart success already, album standouts have to be the Rodney “DarkChild” Jerkins produced “Turn It Up” and “Feeling Me Right Now,” which allow Ms. Rowland to play with tempos effectively with synth-heavy beats and layered vocals.
Speaking of playing with tempos, by far my favorite song to appear on Here I Am has to be the David Guetta/Rico Love dance-floor anthem in “Commander.” This is no secret, for months I’ve been championing this song, which has such crossover potential for Ms. Rowland and help re-capture some of that more general pop music crowd that embraced Destiny’s Child in the late 90’s and early ‘00s.
My only gripe about the album overall is Universal is clearly limiting Ms. Rowland’s potential by only marketing her as a urban/R&B artist rather than pursing a more R&B/Pop audience. I’d love to hear at least another one or two tracks in the same spirit as “Commander,” which currently seems quite out of place on Here I Am. The song proves that she’s capable of broader commercial appeal –- if the forces that be will just let her truly have her shining moment. Ms. Rowland is ready and very capable to go toe-to-toe with the likes of Rihanna, Beyonce, and even Katy Perry.
Must-Hear Tracks: “Commandeer,” “Motivation” ft. Lil Wayne, “I’m Dat Chick,” and “Turn It Up.”

Kelly Clarkson - Breaking Your Own Heart

Kelly Clarkson - Breaking Your Own Heart Lyrics

Shaking your head like it's all wrong
Before you're here you're already gone
And even with the light all around you
You're all alone in the dark

You're breaking your own heart
Taking it too far down the lonely road
You say it's just one love
But when it's close enough you just let it go
The very thing you've been the most afraid of
You've been doing it from the start, breaking your own heart

Too many tears, too many falls
It's easy to hear behind these walls
But you don't have to walk in the shadows
Life is so hard

You're breaking your own heart
Taking it too far down the lonely road
You say it's just one love
But when it's close enough you just let it go
The very thing you've been the most afraid of
You've been doing it from the start, breaking your own heart

You're breaking your own heart
You're breaking your own heart

It's not too late, I'm still right here
If only you let go of your fears

You're breaking your heart
Taking your own heart down the lonely road
You say it's just one love
But when it's close enough you just let it go
The very thing you've been the most afraid of
You've been doing it from the start, breaking your own heart

You're breaking your own heart

Mandy Moore - Only Hope MP3

Mandy Moore - Only Hope lyrics

There's a song that's inside of my soul.
It's the one that I've tried to write over and over again
I'm awake in the infinite cold.
But you sing to me over and over and over again.

So, I lay my head back down.
And I lift my hands and pray
To be only yours, I pray, to be only yours
I know now you're my only hope.

Sing to me the song of the stars.
Of your galaxy dancing and laughing and laughing again.
When it feels like my dreams are so far
Sing to me of the plans that you have for me over again.

So I lay my head back down.
And I lift my hands and pray
To be only yours, I pray, to be only yours
I know now, you're my only hope.

I give you my destiny.
I'm giving you all of me.
I want your symphony, singing in all that I am
At the top of my lungs, I'm giving it back.

So I lay my head back down.
And I lift my hands and pray
To be only yours, I pray, to be only yours
I pray, to be only yours
I know now you're my only hope.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn

The Twilight Saga 4
"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn" getting closer to hiring director

SANTA MARIA, CA, March 11, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- According to an inside source, the fourth saga and the most highly anticipated film in the Twilight Series is close to hiring Bill Condon to direct, and it will be split into two movies. "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part I", and "Part II" has not been confirmed "officially" by Summit Entertainment, however author Stephenie Meyer has stated, "it would have to be made into multiple movies because it is hard to imagine it fitting into ninety minutes."

In addition, a new production company, Sunswept Entertainment, has been brought on board for Breaking Dawn. Sunswept Entertainment was created by Karen Rosenfelt, who is the daughter of former MGM Chairman & CEO Frank Edward Rosenfelt. Karen Rosenfelt served as Producer on both "Twilight" and on "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse". She did not work on "New Moon", but is producing "Breaking Dawn" through her Sunswept Entertainment banner.

Fans can expect a massive talent search for the role of Renesmee Cullen, the half-vampire, half-human daughter of Edward Cullen and Bella Swan, just as there was for the roles of Seth and Leah Clearwater in "Eclipse". Due to the introduction of this character, Breaking Dawn is going to be the most CG-intense film of the Twilight series.

The Breaking Dawn novel is much more adult in tone than its three predecessors. Therefore the screenplay adaptation will likely have quite a bit of tweaking due to the explicit sex and birth scenes to avoid an R rating.

Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner have officially signed on to Breaking Dawn. The Breaking Dawn's director has yet to be officially announced.

Laura's Hungairan originating real first name is Orsolya, another common comparative to the name Ursula. She chose the name Laura as an alias or screen name for her first few porn shoots, Orsolya became her trade calling and symbiotic real world expose to choice of pride in branding her true identity to the world . Throughout this out coming period she thought it to be most efficient and simplistic for her rising fan base to envelope the use of both naming's to embrace her fame as Laura Orsolya, using what she had built from both as one total package. She runs fond to simply going by Laura, but Orsolya is a a rare gem for separation from many other starlets common name usages within the industry. More recently, Orsolya has modeled for XX-Cel, and DDF Busty under the name Laura M. She is featured in a wide variety of soft edge displays and full on hardcore romps in porntastic adventure.

Score Group picked her up early on and has enjoyed a fantastic ride with this buxom beauty displaying her finely tuned assets and holdings throughout their portfolio's. The bold Laura has stolen the shows in some dynamic offerings and notable hardcore videos, a far reaching favorite of her portrayals' was with Rocco Siffredi in Rocco: Animal Trainer 7 and Rocco: Animal Trainer 8. Rocco felt the contrast of her ease to bring out the show in him was a magnificent outcome surely enjoyable to any spectator to this event.

Orsolya's career in the industry is quite sporadic as she had many travel opportunities and always out to aid where she could between productions, often finding friends in uncommon places. Her personality seems to attract the troubled souls and a true to nature motherly instinct she was there to help. Her intrinsic development left "no holes barred" as evidence in her many positional offerings of on screen sexual co-part satiating methods. No matter the scene Laura was part of the mix, giving - receiving - supporting - mixing it up throughout the spectrum of sensations to visual, spatial, taste, and ever most inclusive to orgasmic satisfaction. Laura, no matter the role is the true focal point to any lucky onlooker, she can deliver the goods, time and time again, taunting viewers to CUM give it a try!

Standing at 5 ft 6 in (1.68 m) and weighing around 138 lb (63 kg), Laura Orsolya is statuesque and solidly built. In her movies like was earlier stated, she truly becomes the focal attention grabber, case in point with Rocco Siffredi, her frame was more dominant than Rocco's (especially due to those fine twins of flesh she carries so proudly) some co stars were set aback in working with those twin dynamos', saying they are awe inspiring and somewhat pleasantly distracting, as though a show within a show for them.

Orsolya's physique notably changed between 2003 and 2005. She became more embracing to the BBW of voluptuous sexy entail: her body became more proportionately dominant and visually spectacular as in a fresh taste of new offer to her desirous fan base, her breasts defiantly larger, her face much fuller, and her hair distinctly blonder than the previous display. This caused some confusion as to whether the model going by the name "Laura Orsolya" were one woman or two different women. Bigger blonder and the best yet in a unanimous display of accolades from her fans, as wondrous as the change so reflects the amorous comments she now receives. As recent as 2008 she has filled out very nicely as comments render and even cosmetically felt the desire to add a tattoo to her biological landscape upon her left leg.

Mr. Popper's Penguins 2011

Movie Review: 'Mr. Popper's Penguins'
The children's classic gets an urban updating in the film version starring a toned-down Jim Carrey.

"Mr. Popper's Penguins," a mildly amusing flight of fancy for the family crowd, is far better for its penguins than its Popper. Not that Jim Carrey's Mr. Popper is poorly done, per se. But the penguins are perfectly suited for stealing scenes and hearts as they waddle around and completely take over this farce.

There are six of them — Captain, Lovey, Bitey, Nimrod, Stinky and Loudy — named like Snow White's dwarfs for their personality quirks. And despite their elegant white tie and tails look, they wreak a remarkable amount of smile-inducing havoc anywhere their bright orange webbies take them, which is into virtually every corner of Mr. Popper's life.

For director Mark Waters, who peaked early with "Mean Girls" in 2004 and has struggled more than succeeded since, "Mr. Popper's" represents a modest uptick. Screenwriters Sean Anders and John Morris (the pair behind the underappreciated silly splash of "Hot Tub Time Machine") and Jared Stern have taken the bones of the 1938 children's classic by Richard and Florence Atwater — man gets penguins, life is upended, lessons are learned — and gives the film lots of modern problems, maybe one or two too many.

Mr. Popper's base of operation shifts from the country to the big city, New York. He's no longer a lowly house painter but a big-shot Manhattan real estate wheeler-dealer. But at its heart, Mr. Popper's journey of self-discovery has changed, with the movie introducing the notion of and building the film around what it takes to be a good father in these complicated times.

The film begins with a quick flashback of young Tommy Popper getting ham radio dispatches from his world-traveling adventurer father (an absentee dad, in modern parlance). When next we see him, he's grown into a successful exec, with a divorce on the books, the kids every other weekend and his emotions carefully shelved. Yet in his pristine Manhattan penthouse, it's clear to see that he's lonely at the top.

With the news of his father's death comes an unexpected legacy: a penguin. One penguin soon becomes six (it's a shipping issue). Care and feeding proves difficult to say the least. His "p" popping, alliterating assistant Pippi (Ophelia Lovibond) trails along doing what she can. Harder to handle for this corporate climber is Popper's growing affection for the birds and the way they're warming up relations with the family.

The family is an amiable one with Carla Gugino as the former missus more bemused than bitter. Madeline Carroll ("Swing Vote") and Maxwell Perry Cotton are the teen and pre-teen offspring, Janie and Billy, who've been put in charge of general discontent. But you can tell there's a lot of goodwill lingering around the edges since they are charmed by Dad's transformation from uptight to slightly crazy as he converts his apartment into a frigid ice and snow playground for his penguin pack.

There are a couple of outside pressures that keep the action cooking. Popper's acquisition-hungry bosses want Tavern on the Green, and Popper's future is riding on persuading its reluctant society doyenne (Angela Lansbury) to sell. The other is the New York Zoo's "flightless bird specialist" (Craig Gregg), who, in a move reminiscent of "101 Dalmatians," is trying to get his hands on the birds for questionable reasons.

Green Lantern movie 2011

The latest superhero movie, Warner Bros.' reinterpretation of the comic book character, stars Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively and Peter Sarsgaard.

At least for some members of the public, Green Lantern will prompt the question of how many more comics-based superheroes with awesome powers and responsibilities we really need. Dramatically tart in certain scenes but more often just spinning its wheels doing variations on similar moments from previous episodes in the lives of likewise endowed relatives in the DC and Marvel universes, Warner Bros.' attempt to launch a major new fantasy action hero franchise serves up all the requisite elements with enough self-deprecating humor to suggest it doesn't take itself too seriously. But familiarity may begin to breed creeping signs of contempt, if not in immediate negative box office results then in a general fatigue with such enterprises that's bound to set in sooner or later.
Known to multiple generations of comic book fans through various incarnations that have sprung up since 1940, Green Lantern possesses powers that would be the envy of many another hero, including virtually infinite strength to unleash and ward off destruction, as well as the ability to propel himself quickly into the deep reaches of space and back. He's also accoutered in a uniform distinctly less cool than Batman's and less emblematic than Superman's, a skin-tight green affair with a matching mask that, here at least, he can remove simply by wishing it away when his girlfriend prefers to look him in the eyes without laughing. Simply put, it's an outfit you really can't get away with unless you're as good looking as Ryan Reynolds.
Not uncharacteristically, the future Green Lantern suffered a terrible tragedy in his youth; his beloved test pilot father went up in flames before his very eyes. Courting the same fate himself, little Hal Jordan also grew up to become a dauntless airman, a mad daredevil whose abiding policy with both plane crashes and with women is to be able to walk away from them. Twice burned in this regard has been Carol Ferris (Blake Lively), a fellow flier and aviation heiress who nonetheless has eyes only for the reckless cad.
But it's for his apparent lack of fear that Hal is chosen by the guardians of an ancient and very distant civilization to join the ultra-elite Green Lantern Corps., a group so exclusive that no human has ever before been invited into it. The script by the quartet of Greg Berlanti, Michael Green, Marc Guggenheim and Michael Goldberg is heavy on exposition, for the benefit of the uncomprehending Hal as well as for the audience, which cannot be expected to know much about this second-tier DC figure.
In fact, the backdrop is not uninteresting. The universe, according to this gospel, is made up of 3,600 sectors, with the oldest and most advanced is to be found on Oa, an intergalactic outpost where wrinkled, Yoda-like sages have long reigned over a select group of diverse aliens dedicated to boldly repulsing evil wherever it asserts itself.
But when a renegade Corps leader decides to embrace fear and become the arch-villain Parallax (the boom-boxy voice of Clancy Brown), humanity is alerted by the arrival on Earth of emissary Abin Sur (Temuera Morrison), a purple-skinned fellow who, before expiring, passes off his green ring and empowering lantern to the unsuspecting Hal. He's a reluctant hero, to be sure, who, after a rough training mission to Oa, is only convinced to take up the cause against the imminent Parallax by the immensely impressed Carol.
Not quite doing for an untested superhero what he did for James Bond in Casino Royale, director Martin Campbell seems to most relish the amusing character of Hector Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard), a brilliant nerdy scientist enlisted by the government to examine Abin Sur's corpse. Thrilled by the privilege, he is unwittingly contaminated by the exposure and quickly transformed into a mind-reading Elephant Man lookalike with a zealous propensity for the dark side and a score to settle with his bigshot politician dad (Tim Robbins). Sarsgaard has great fun with the role in a performance that increasingly seems like a sly imitation of John Malkovich at his most arch.
But the real threat is Parallax, who eventually attacks Earth in the visually disarming form of a billowing, shape-changing, fire-breathing, octopus-like brown cloud. Faced with such an opponent, Hal packs away his misgivings once and for all to embrace his new powers and cleverly lure Parallax to the one place that might doom him.
To be sure, there is enough going on here to keep fans' 3D glasses glued to their heads: In Oa, there is a whole new planet to explore (even if parts of it disconcertingly resemble a darker version of the ugly set for How the Grinch Stole Christmas), the actors are mostly well cast and effective enough and the action comes on frequently, if not always convincingly; the hero's way of rescuing a large outdoor gathering from an out-of-control helicopter looks hokey and Carol's last-second saving the day in a climactic emergency is flat-out ridiculous.
Now more than ever resembling the circa 1965 Warren Beatty, Reynolds passes muster as a bad boy with greatness thrust upon him and future installments, should they follow, will not need to indulge his prolonged vacillations about accepting his new role in life. And speaking of sequels, an end credits insert plainly reveals which noble character becomes a villain in the next episode.
